Prepare for your summer to get 1,000 times yummier.
Seriously.
We’re going to be sipping in style, grilling the easiest recipes (ahem, this magical onion dip for starters), and enjoying time in the sunshine from the comfort of our own backyard.
I’ve been spending so much time outside now that the days are getting warmer (c’mon Minnesota…stay this way, pleeease!).
And the routine has looked a lot like this: WFH (work from home) and stare longingly out my window as the day passes, then head straight to WFH (wine from home) on the patio. It really is the best kind of schedule one can have at a time like this.
Then comes an easy snack made while dinner is on the grill, too.

This time spent outside has also included a lot of card games while the grill is doing its thing.
If we can’t have friends over, at least we can have delicious snacks, card games, and Decoy wine.
So let’s get to it – what is this grilled onion dip all about anyway? And how does it pair up with the soft, silky Decoy Pinot Noir? Let’s find out…
HOW TO MAKE ONION DIP ON THE GRILL
Something magical happens when you take a whole onion, garlic cloves, and butter and wrap them in foil on the grill to roast.
A deep flavor develops, turning the onion from pungent to luxurious. It’s the easiest way to prep onions for onion dip I can think of, too.
Set it and forget it – the best strategy when you’re looking to sit back, sip, and relax.

Here’s the nitty gritty:
Step 1: remove the top and bottom of the onion, then peel the outer ‘paper’ layer off of the onion. Make 4 slits down the onion, almost to the bottom but not all the way through. Pull open the layers of the onion to create room for…

Step 2: the garlic! place the whole (yes, whole!) garlic cloves safely inside the onion layers.
Step 3: top the onion with butter, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt. The butter is going to keep the onion moist, while becoming the most flavorful liquid that’s going into our sauce (WIN).

Step 4: wrap the whole onion in foil and grill for 25-35 minutes (depending on how steady you’re able to keep your grill temperature and the location of the onion), until it’s soft.

Step 5: as the onion cools, mix up the base of the dip: sour cream, worcheshire sauce, a little more onion powder, and salt and pepper to taste.
Don’t forget to pour in the butter sauce that formed in the onion packet, too! Once the onion is cool enough to handle, chop it, and the garlic cloves up and add them to the dip.

Voila!
There you have it – the easiest, creamiest, flavorfulist (yes, it’s going to be a word now) dip for the summer of 2020.
The easy onion dip recipe that will get you through summer afternoons outside, that will be your appetizer on repeat, and that will forever pair beautifully with your Decoy Pinot Noir.

WAYS TO SIP IN STYLE
I’ve already mentioned that we’ve been playing endless card games outside to pass time as we wait for the grill to work its magic.

There’s absolutely nothing I love more than those calm afternoons, wine in hand, and a game of Gin Rummy or war going on.
Oh, and puppy love trying to get in on the action. He’s been thoroughly enjoying our wine-from-home style lately, too. We’re all making the best of our time at home, thanks to Decoy helping us sip in style!

RECIPE SUBSTITUTIONS
One of the things I love most about Grilled Sour Cream and Onion Dip (and don’t be fooled, there are many) is how it’s made with very few pantry ingredients.
It’s simplicity is undeniable, and I’m willing to bet you have a lot of the ingredients already. But never fear, if you don’t, there are quite a few substitution options.
There are also a variety of ways to mix up the dip, too, if you have fresh herbs on hand (hello, summer garden!), your possibilities are endless.

Sour Cream Substitutions:
- Mayonnaise
- Plain yogurt
- Room temperature cream cheese in place for half of the sour cream
Worchestire Substitutions
Worchestire is a big, savory addition to recipes, so you want to substitute it with something that’s equally savory, sour, a little bit sweet, and some sort of funky. The substitutions won’t quite replace the flavor, but rest assured that they’ll work if needed!
- Soy sauce
- Steak Sauce (it is a thicker consistency so taste as you add)
- Coconut aminos
Possible Additions:
I’ve loved playing around with different herb additions to the dip. It’s a fun way to mix it up every now and again if you have fresh herbs on hand, but not required if you don’t!
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Chives
- Parsley (best for garnish)
- Red pepper flakes or hot sauce
Now go grab some wine glasses, a bottle of Decoy Pinot Noir, and start that grill!

Description
Grilled Sour Cream and Onion Dip is an easy no-hassle appetizer recipe made with pantry staples. Roasted on the grill, the onion and garlic become a caramelized dream and make this onion dip addictingly delicious!
Ingredients
- 1 medium-sized yellow onion
- 4 garlic cloves, peeled and halved
- 2 TBSP unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 3/4 tsp onion powder, divided
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 3/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 tsp + few splashes Worcheshire sauce
- Additional salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven or grill to 450°F. Prepare the onion by cutting off the top and bottom, and removing the outer layer. Cut 4 slits in the onion top, going about halfway through. Cut out the center of the onion, about 1 inch deep. Place the prepared onion on a piece of foil large enough to wrap around the entire onion.
- Gently peel back several layers of the onion and place 4 garlic cloves inside the onion layers and on top of the onion as best as possible. Place the butter, 1/2 tsp onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper on top of the onion. Wrap the foil around the onion.
- Place the foil packet on the top rack of the grill or in the middle of the oven. Roast for 25-35 minutes, until tender. Remove from heat, open foil, and let cool.
- Once the onion is cooled enough to handle, drain the remaining liquid into a bowl. Chop the onion and garlic to the desired size for the dip.
- Whisk together excess liquid with sour cream, Worcheshire sauce, 1/4 tsp onion powder, salt, and pepper. Taste to adjust salt/pepper/onion levels as needed and add the chopped onion and garlic, stirring until combined. Chill in an airtight container until ready to serve (you can serve immediately but I personally like it chilled). Serve with potato chips and enjoy!
